Living the Sutra: Atha Yoga Anushasanam

Do you ever feel like life is divided by invisible lines - between the magical and the mundane? As if the extraordinary moments live in one realm, and the ordinary ones in another?

It’s a deeply human feeling. We rush through checklists, dishes, pajamas, and hair-washing - not because they’re hard, but because we’re chasing something more enchanted. Something that feels meaningful. We crave the sparkle, the ceremony, the sense of being alive.

But somewhere along the way, we decided there’s a separation. That yoga belongs on the mat, not in the line at the post office. That presence is only experienced watching sunsets and enjoying savasana - not for brushing our teeth or folding laundry.

And yet - what if the line isn’t real?

What if the magic is in how we meet each moment? What if the mundane is just waiting to be amplified?

Living the Sutra: Atha Yoga Anushasanam

There’s a quiet power in the first words of the Yoga Sutras: Atha Yoga Anushasanam  - Now, the practice of yoga begins.

Not tomorrow. Not when life feels easier or more sparkly. Not when we’ve perfected our headstand or silenced every thought. Now.  This moment, as it is, is the doorway.

When we slow down, breathe, and pay attention, even the simplest acts become sacred. The way we patiently wait for our coffee to brew. The way we greet a stranger. The way we move through space.

Yoga teaches us this: that every moment is an invitation. Not just to get things done, but to be in them. To feel. To notice. To live.

So maybe the question isn’t how much we’re rushing through. Maybe it’s: How much are we willing to awaken to?

Daily Intention: I choose to meet each moment with wonder, presence, and gratitude.   Whether grand or quiet, familiar or new, I open my heart to the possibility that magic lives here. I slow down. I listen. I feel. Today, I let the ordinary become extraordinary simply by being fully in it.

Whilst we don't need a yoga retreat, remember the magic is in sitting on the sofa too, it can be nice to go away and dedicate your time to exactly this, as a practice. If you're interested in a yoga retreat Portugal or a yoga retreat in Turkey, you can join me next year.
